Quick Overview

Registering a trademark with the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) gives you exclusive rights to use it for the goods or services it covers, and makes it easier to take action against anyone using a confusingly similar mark.

Who This Guide Is For

This guide is for business owners considering protecting a name, logo or slogan with a registered UK trademark.

What You May Need

  • A clear representation of the mark you want to register (word, logo, or both)
  • A list of the goods and/or services it should cover, grouped into trademark classes
  • Confirmation the mark isn't already registered or too similar to an existing one

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Search existing trademarks to check your proposed mark is available.
  2. Choose the right classes covering the goods and services your business offers.
  3. Apply to the UKIPO, providing your mark and chosen classes.
  4. Respond to any objections raised during examination, if applicable.
  5. Complete the opposition period, after which the trademark is registered if unopposed.

Important Considerations

Trademark registration is separate from — and doesn't automatically follow from — registering a company name at Companies House. A registered trademark needs to be renewed periodically to stay in force.
