If your business has never imported or exported goods before, "EORI number" probably isn't on your radar — until the first shipment that needs one shows up at customs without it.

It Identifies Your Business to Customs

An EORI (Economic Operators Registration and Identification) number is how customs authorities identify a business moving goods across a border. No number generally means no clearance.

It's Not Automatic

Having a company or being VAT registered doesn't automatically give you an EORI number — it's a separate application, generally made online through HMRC.

UK and EU Are Handled Separately

If you trade with both the UK and the EU, you may need a UK EORI number and a separate EU one — worth checking which applies to your specific trade routes.
